Those 19's look immaculate!
Look after them & they'll reward you with some of the best sound around.
Are we likely to see any gold records on the wall any time soon???
Cheers,
John
Wow! Great info! I had no idea that the size of the cabinet/tighter tuning would help protect the Valencia's woofers and I never realized that the fact that they're 16 ohm compared to the Model 19 being 8 ohm would be a significant factor as well. As far as the diaphragms, I believe they are original since I bought the Valencias from my older brother who owned them since the 70's and he bought them from the original owner who only used them for his home stereo. BTW, here's a close up of one of the 806A's (date code from October 1969--hmm, the Beatles were still together--cool!)--both 806A's have that same date code.
Seems like it's pretty much unanimous that Model 19's are not suited for PA--not even just for (at home) band practices. I'm glad I asked--I'm not going to buy a pair for my PA. I've been using the Valencias with success for quite a while now--as I mentioned they have the exact same drivers and horn as A7's from 1966 (http://www.lansingheritage.org/image...vott/page6.jpg --the 806A driver, 811 horn, 416 woofer) and have held up great/still sound great. We sometimes crank up a CD through the PA when we're taking a break at band practice and CD's sound crystal clear/clean through them (nice tight/clean low end/crisp highs) as well as the vocals, guitars, and keyboards that we crank through them during practice. I'll stick with them rather than blow up an innocent pair of Model 19's. I'll keep using the 19's that I currently own for my home stereo only--they've never been used for PA.
BTW, even though it is a rock band (and our practices would be considered pretty loud to many non-rock musician's ears), we are careful at practice and only turn up the PA and other instruments loud enough to be heard over the acoustic drum kit (we don't mic. the drums at practice--not even the kick drum). We use high quality vocal microphones (uni-directional) and never crank them loud enough to feedback. We also never put bass guitar through the Valencias although some of the keyboard patches have nice deep bass to them......
I'm a huge King of the Hill fan--a lot of people didn't know that Tom Petty was the voice of "Lucky" on King of the Hill--Luanne's boyfriend (R.I.P. Brittany Murphy--voice of Luanne).....
Below are my home stereo speakers that you guys just saved--never been used for P.A. and never will be. (click on images to enlarge) Thanks again everyone.....

Yes, they are in mint condition--even the grills. I was very lucky to buy them from a guy who lived less than an hour from my house--I swear he must have stored them in a time capsule... They are, hands down, the best pair of speakers I have ever heard--and I've owned several pair of different Altecs through the years..... The only issue I've ever had to deal with on them is that a couple of the pots were a little noisy, I actually just cleaned them last week and they are now whisper quiet and working great again.....
Well, we're aiming for platinum, but gold will do in a pinch! BTW, I noticed you're from Australia. I just saw a great band from "down under" last month (from New Zealand)--they played an outdoor concert in Buffalo, NY --great concert! Are Crowded House popular down there (as popular as their predecessors, Split Enz)? Crowded House Concert Setlist at Buffalo Place, Buffalo on July 16, 2010 | setlist.fm
Yeah, I sometimes wheel the exercise bike into that room (seen in photo). I guess I won't be giving up music to pursue a professional photography career any time soon. BTW, the best exercise I ever got in that room has to be moving the Model 19's in the day I bought them!
Yes, Crowded House are very popular, although that is really from days gone by. They have moved on to other individual projects....& very successfully.
I used to work as a professional drummer in Australia many years ago. Mostly in a covers band, but I also worked in the Ray Burgess band, Railroad Gin, Jeff St John, did tours with Norman Gunston & others.
Good luck with your band,
John
OT: Crowded House are rock icons, Down Under.
